The Java Tutorials are continuously updated to keep up with changes to the Java Platform and to incorporate feedback from our readers. This release of the tutorial coincides with the release of JDK 8. See What's New in JDK 8 for more information about new features in this release, which includes the following:

• Lambda expressions enable you to treat functionality as a method argument, or code as data. Lambda expressions let you express instances of single-method interfaces (referred to as functional interfaces) more compactly.
• Default methods are methods in an interface that have an implementation. They enable new functionality to be added to the interfaces of libraries and ensure binary compatibility with code written for older versions of those interfaces.
• Aggregate operations enable you to perform functional-style operations on streams of elements, in particular, bulk operations on collections, such as sequential or parallel map-reduce transformations.
• Date-Time APIs enable you to represent dates and times and manipulate date and time values. They support the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) calendar system as well as other commonly used global calendars.
• Type annotations can be used in conjunction with pluggable type systems for improved type checking, and repeating annotations enable you to apply the same annotation to a declaration or type use.

Cristiano Ronaldo is not a Paris Saint-Germain target, says French club chief

Cristiano Ronaldo is not a target for Paris Saint-Germain, according to the French club's chairman Nasser al-Khelaifi.

Speculation has linked the Portuguese superstar with a move from Real Madrid to the big-spending Ligue 1 leaders, who have brought in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi amongst other big-name players in recent years.
Leonardo, who left his role as PSG sporting director last July, recently claimed that he had done "everything within the written laws" to try to lure the former Manchester United player to the French capital.
However, Al-Khelaifi has denied that his club, bankrolled by wealthy owners from Qatar, is set to bid for the 28-year-old's services.
He said: "All the players we are dreaming about are already at PSG. Ronaldo is a huge player we respect a lot. But he is under contract at Real Madrid, who I respect a lot too.
"The day I really want a Real player, believe me I will know to talk to (Real president) Florentino Perez. It is not the case so far."
Meanwhile, Perez echoed Al-Khelaifi's words and rebuffed suggestions that the Spanish giants were interested in PSG's 21-year-old Italian midfielder Marco Verratti.
He explained: "We are currently not in talks with PSG about any player. We are not in negotiation with PSG over Cristiano or Verratti. Our two clubs have a very good relationship."
One player keen to remain with PSG is midfielder Jeremy Menez, who has spent much of the season out of Laurent Blanc's side.
"My future? I will try to get my position in the team back, and work hard to achieve it," said the 26-year-old France international.
"There could have been difficult moments, but I believe it will change. Personally, I have never stated that I want to leave."
 

Transfer news: AC Milan deny rumours that Mario Balotelli is up for sale

AC Milan have denied speculation that striker Mario Balotelli will be available to buy in next month's transfer window.

Reports emanating from Italy claimed Milan president Silvio Berlusconi was ready to listen to offers for Balotelli after a bust-up with the former Manchester City forward.
Balotelli's future at the San Siro has been the subject of conjecture for some time, with the 23-year-old reportedly unsettled with life with the Rossoneri.
Milan have moved quickly to dismiss the rumours and insist the Italian is not for sale.
"AC Milan deny absolutely and with strength the declarations that would have been referred to the Milan president about an unthinkable collocation of Mario Balotelli on the market," read a club statement.
"Mario Balotelli is and remains a Milan player."
Balotelli has made 12 Serie A appearances for Milan this season, scoring six goals in what has been a disappointing season for the Rossoneri this term.
 

Fredy Guarin's departure to Chelsea would hurt Inter Milan, admits Ricky Alvarez

Inter Milan midfielder Ricky Alvarez has admitted that it would be a loss for his side if Fredy Guarin was to leave in January.
The 27-year-old Colombia international has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea in January and recently claimed that Blues boss Jose Mourinho is the "number one" manager in the world.
Alvarez believes that Inter should try to keep hold of the "important" midfielder and concedes that his departure would have a negative impact on their season.
"I would be sorry if Guarin goes," he told Sky Sport Italia. "He is an important player for us and has done very well.
"We would be sorry to lose a player like him, but we still don't know anything. Fredy is still with us and we must take advantage of him to the maximum.
Alvarez has also played down suggestions that Inter could sell him as well in the near future.
"I am happy here and I want to stay," said the 27-year-old. "However, I don't know about other things and the club has not told me anything.
"I don't know about extending my contract either. I just think about playing."
 

Premier League: Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says that none of his players are divers

Jose Mourinho insists there are no divers at Chelsea and that Oscar made a mistake when he was booked for simulation against Southampton on Wednesday.

Oscar became the latest player to be shown a yellow card for diving in a series of high-profile offences which prompted FIFA president Sepp Blatter to talk of the use of sin-bins.
Mourinho reprimanded Oscar following the Brazilian's tumble over Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis, but insists it was a one-off.
"It's impossible for him to get a reputation, unless somebody wants to be unfair and to clean the image of other people by using Oscar's situation in the last game," he said.
"I want to make it clear: there are many divers in the world of football. There are many divers in some big clubs in the world of football.
"There are some divers in England. Not many, some. In Chelsea, no divers, no divers at all.
"Oscar made a mistake, which he tells me and I believe him, he was completely convinced the goalkeeper was coming to smash him.
"The goalkeeper didn't, he made his mistake, he was punished with a yellow card, he accept the yellow card in a very calm way.
"His manager comes after in the press to say 'well done Mr Atkinson'. End of story. Here we don't have divers."
Mourinho also stated Eden Hazard is not awarded free-kicks and penalties when he is fouled.
"It looks like opponents who can do anything to him and nothing happens," he said.
"With Hazard it doesn't matter in the box, outside the box. Not against Southampton, but week after week in the box there are penalties.
"And, as it happened in Southampton, outside the box every action is a foul and this kid is anything but a diver."
Mourinho wants diving to be eradicated from the global game.
"If Mr Blatter wants to analyse the situation, I give him my advice and my experience, because I've worked in many different countries," he added.
"Go to other countries, fight the problem in other countries, don't be afraid to go to the big clubs. Don't be afraid to go to some big players.
"And after that come to England, because in England the job is easy. England is the best country."

Transfer news: Paul Pogba insists he is happy to stay at Juventus

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has told Italian newspaper La Repubblica that he is happy in Italy regardless of continual speculation linking him with a move away.

The 20-year-old, who started his senior career at Manchester United, has reportedly been the subject of interest from Arsenal, while PSG, Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid have all been linked with a bid
Pogba has established himself as a key player since his switch to Turin in 2012 and says that although he dreamt of playing for a number of European giants as a youngster, he is settled with Antonio Conte's side.
"I feel good at Juve," he told La Repubblica.
"I don't hide that when I was a child I was dreaming to play with Arsenal or Barcelona. And now I dream of playing with the French national team against my brothers.

"Ferguson saw the depth, he was able to understand the developments that weren't there yet. Many players owe their success to him," he said.
"He believed with improvement in me too, even if I wasn't playing so much.
"He told me not to come to Italy due to racism. I told him that the racism is everywhere, in England too."
Meanwhile, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi admitted that although he is a keen admirer of Pogba, a deal would be unlikely at the time-being.
"He is a Parisien. He is a great player that represents the future of France," he told Le Parisien.
"It will not be this winter, maybe next summer."

Tottenham defender Michael Dawson is relishing Saturday's FA Cup derby showdown with Arsenal at the Emirates.

Spurs will go into the third-round tie on the crest of a wave following their 2-1 win at Manchester United on New Year's Day as they continued their improvement since Tim Sherwood replaced Andre Villas-Boas as boss.

"We never go anywhere with fear, especially Arsenal," said Dawson.
"It's a north London derby. We know what that means to the fans and to the players.
"There's immense pride for all of us in pulling that white shirt on, playing for the team and each other. That's what we'll be doing on Saturday.
"Sometimes things don't work out as well as you'd like but that's when you've got to stand strong as a team and the quality comes out when you can show the determination we did on Wednesday.
"We've never written ourselves off. People can say what they want but we've bounced back from those disappointing results.
"We knew even then that we were still right in the mix, although we are not going to get carried away just because we've gone to Old Trafford and won.
"We know we've got the FA Cup game against Arsenal and then Palace in the league.
"We'll keep plugging along, keep working and hopefully keep picking up results."
 

Transfer news: Marco Reus happy at Borussia Dortmund

Marco Reus insists that he is happy to stay at Borussia Dortmund despite reports linking him with a move to Manchester United.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder has two-and-a-half years remaining on his current deal, but he has been the subject of speculation since he starred in last season's Champions League campaign, when Dortmund reached the final.
Manchester City and Barcelona are also rumoured to be interested in the German's services, although he maintains that he is content at the Westfalenstadion.
"I have a contract with Borussia Dortmund and I am happy to be here," he told BILD.
"All I can say about is that I am not thinking about a transfer. I am focused on BVB and anything else is something for the future."
Reus also stated that he is hoping for World Cup and Champions League success this year.
He said: "These are two very big goals and both are not entirely unrealistic.
"Who knows what we can achieve in the Champions League. Nobody thought we could make it to the final last season either.
"We finally want to win the World Cup again with Germany and will have to show our ambition right from the start of the competition. We will prepare meticulously for this amazing tournament."

Premier League: Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson optimistic for 2014

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson is hoping the New Year's Day win over Hull City can kick-start a successful 2014 for his side.

Goals from Daniel Agger and Luis Suarez either side of half-time ensured that Brendan Rodgers' men began the year by returning to winning ways following back-to-back 2-1 defeats against title rivals Manchester City and Chelsea.
The three points meant that Liverpool returned to the top four and, although Henderson admitted it was tougher than they would have liked, the 23-year-old acknowledged the need for opening the year with a win.
It was important to get the year off to a good start," he told the Liverpool Echo.
"Maybe we didn't play as well as we have done in certain games when we have won by four or five, but we showed we can grind a result out when we're not at our best.
"We could have had more goals. I should have scored with the chance I had when I dragged it wide."And their 'keeper made a couple of good saves from Philippe [Coutinho] but the most important thing was getting the three points and we're delighted with the result.
"Our aim is to make Anfield a fortress - to make it really difficult for teams when they come here.
"We've been doing that and hopefully we can keep doing that and pick up points away too."
Henderson also spoke of the testing Christmas period which saw his side play three games in the space of a week, admitting that the defeats away to Manchester City and Chelsea were disappointing.
"This period hasn't been too bad for us but it could have been a little bit better," he said.
"I think we can't be too disheartened with the performances against Man City and Chelsea. I felt we played well and definitely deserved something out of both games"I thought we matched them, if not were better than them, in the two games. We just didn't get the bit of luck that we deserved.
"We had to forget about all that and put things right against Hull. It was very important to get back to winning ways after those two defeats.
"We're back in the top four and I definitely believe we can stay there. Now we've got to keep it going and try to kick on for the rest of the season."

More than often it's the home team that comes out looking to do most of the attacking.
